Airport receives 2003 FAA / Governor's Award
Marshall's airport has won the 2003 FAA / Governor's Award for excellence in airport planning airport development, airport maintenance and public relations. Marshall's airport was first constructed in 1946 as a turf landing strip. Since then it has expanded to include a 5010-foot paved primary runway with a full parallel taxiway and a 3205-foot paved crosswind runway. The apron and building area offers the services of a fixed base operator, several private and public hangars, and an award winning arrival and departure building. As a link to state, national, and international destinations, the Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport in Marshall has played a key role in the development and growth of both the community and regional economy. The airfield facilities include jet length runways and precision navigational aids for all weather operation. On site operations include Midwest Aviation, the fixed base operator, the Schwan Food Company, and Schwan's Red Baron Squadron, as well as the City of Marshall. A need was identified for an enhanced arrival and departure building, and a goal was set to complete a new facility in time to host the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Schwan Food Company. This goal allowed les than thirty months from conception to completion of a multi-faceted undertaking that totaled approximately $8 million dollars. The resulting facilities provide a impressive, positive image to airport users and the public. The City has ongoing plans for the continued development of the airport, including runway extensions to accommodate larger aircraft, upgrades to the lighting systems and additional hangars. Marshall is also actively pursuing scheduled air service to serve the region.
