Senior Living

Seniors today have more options than ever to help them remain active and independent.  Some may want to stay in their own homes with familiar neighbors and surroundings.  Others may be seeking more security or maintenance-free housing.

Making a change in living arrangements is a major decision for families.  Following is a description of some of the senior living options available through Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center:

SENIOR HOUSING

Senior housing is an option for those who like privacy and want to live on their own but have the benefit of many friends and neighbors nearby.  It can be a good fit for people who no longer want to deal with the expense, maintenance, upkeep and potential hassles of owning a home.  It is ideal for seniors who are relatively mobile and self sufficient. A range of apartment sizes and costs are available.  Many apartments are designed for the needs of an aging person, such as specially-equipped bathrooms and 24-hour emergency call services.  Other services that may be included are meals, transportation, social activities and light housekeeping.  Hill Street Place, located on Avera Marshall’s campus, is an example of senior housing.

ASSISTED LIVING

Assisted living is designed for seniors who need some help every day with non-medical aspects of daily activities, but not constant care.  It is similar to senior housing but a better choice for those who need more supervision and are less able to function independently.  Many sizes and costs of apartments are available.  Trained staff may help with bathing, getting dressed, taking medications, shopping, housekeeping, laundry and getting around.  Nurses are on-call 24-hours a day.  These services give seniors an opportunity to stay active and in control of their life.  Boulder Estates in Marshall is an example of a housing complex in Marshall that offers assisted living in partnership with Avera Marshall Home Health Services.

HOME HEALTH CARE

Home health care brings nursing care and personal care services to seniors and other individuals who whish to stay in their homes.  It can be a good alternative for people who have been discharged from a hospital or nursing home but need additional care, people who have short-term health needs or people who need assistance to live independently at home.  Avera Marshall Home Health Services offers home care to a wide range of clients with individualized needs.

ADULT DAY SERVICES

Adult day services provides care for seniors who cannot be left alone during the day.  Seniors can continue to be cared for a home by loved ones and spend a few days or hours each week at a care center.  It allows caregivers a needed break or enables them to continue working while knowing their loved one is being well-cared for during the day.  Services can include; meals and snacks, recreational activities, personal hygiene services, socialization, health monitoring and evaluation, and medication or treatment administration.  Daybreak Adult Day Services at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center offers adult day services.

NURSING HOME

Nursing homes provide 24-hour nursing care including specialized medical care such as IVs and catheterization for those with serious illness or injury.  People may come to a nursing home to recover from an illness or injury or may choose to make it their permanent home.  Avera Morningside Heights Care Center has recently remodeled the entire facility creating all private rooms, more lounge areas and cozy neighborhoods.  There is also a memory care unit for persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
